Our story
WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO
My Why: The Story Behind Equipping The Community Organization
People often ask me, "How do you do so much?" Or they look at all the programs and services offered through Equipping The Community Organization and ask, "What don't you do?"
The answer is simple: I do what I do because I have seen the gaps.
For more than 30 years, I have worked with people across the lifespan, from children and families to older adults. Throughout my career in social work, aging services, education, mental health, and community outreach, I have met people who were doing their best but simply did not know where to turn. I have sat with grandparents raising grandchildren, older adults trying to choose between food and medication, caregivers overwhelmed by responsibility, families navigating trauma, expectant mothers seeking support, and individuals who needed transportation just to get to a doctor's appointment.
What I learned is that oftentimes, people do not have a support system, they may not have the motivation, or they just simply need some to help them navigate. Most people are lacking access, information, support, and someone willing to walk alongside them.
Too often, services exist, but people cannot find them. Programs exist, but transportation is a barrier. Resources exist, but the application process is overwhelming. People are referred from agency to agency, office to office, and website to website, often becoming discouraged before they ever receive the help they need.
I founded Equipping The Community Organization because I believe no one should have to navigate life's challenges alone.
The word "equipping" is intentional. It means providing people with the tools, knowledge, resources, and support they need to move forward. It is not about doing everything for people. It is about helping people discover their strengths, build resilience, and connect to opportunities that improve their quality of life.
Over the years, I have heard stories that broke my heart. Older adults missing medical appointments because they had no transportation. Families struggling to understand Medicaid and Medicare. Children carrying the weight of trauma they could not put into words. Mothers needing support before, during, and after birth. Caregivers exhausted and isolated. Community members who simply needed someone to listen and help connect the dots.
Those experiences became the foundation of Equipping The Community Organization.
When people see transportation services, community health worker services, doula support, resiliency training, youth programs, educational workshops, caregiver resources, and healthcare navigation all under one organization, it may seem like a lot.
But when I look at it, I see connected pieces.
Transportation affects healthcare access.
Healthcare access affects family stability.
Family stability affects mental health.
Mental health affects education and workforce success.
Workforce success affects economic stability.
Economic stability affects housing, food security, and overall well-being.
Everything is connected.
One day, as I reflected on all the different services and initiatives, I found myself wondering if we were doing too much. Then I heard a simple reminder:
"If you are going to equip the community, you must understand the community's needs."
That changed my perspective.
To equip a community, you must be willing to learn about the challenges people face. You must understand maternal health, transportation barriers, caregiving, trauma, healthcare systems, digital literacy, workforce development, and resource navigation. Not because one organization can solve every problem, but because understanding those issues allows you to connect people to the right solutions.
I know that no single agency can do this work alone.
That is why collaboration is at the heart of everything we do.
True collaboration is more than sitting around a table discussing problems. It is working together to remove barriers, share resources, and create pathways for people to succeed. It is healthcare providers, nonprofits, schools, churches, businesses, government agencies, and community members joining forces around a common goal.
My why is not a program.
My why is people.
It is the older adult who finally gets to dialysis.
It is the mother who feels supported during childbirth.
It is the child who learns healthy ways to cope with stress.
It is the caregiver who realizes they are not alone.
It is the family that finds hope after feeling stuck.
It is the community that becomes stronger when people work together.
Every ride provided, every resource shared, every workshop facilitated, every family connected, every hand held during a difficult season is a reminder of why Equipping The Community Organization exists.
Because everyone deserves access to support.
Everyone deserves dignity.
Everyone deserves hope.
And everyone deserves the opportunity to thrive.
Equipping The Community Organization exists to connect challenged families and individuals across the lifespan to resources, education, motivation, and trauma-informed tools—fostering resilience and creating thriving, connected communities.
That is my why.
That is our mission.
And that is the work I will continue to do.
